Caring for paving slabs: how to keep them looking good?

To keep your yard looking beautiful and cozy, you need proper care of your paving slabs and knowledge of how to clean them from dirt.

Does paving stones require special care?

Proper maintenance of paving slabs does not require significant financial costs. Instead, it is important not to "neglect" the paving stones, clean them regularly from dirt, immediately remove stains that have appeared for one reason or another, and carry out preventive treatments to protect them from the negative effects of climatic and biological factors. At the same time, you need to clearly understand how to clean paving stones and which methods are not recommended.

Such seemingly elementary measures will not only maintain the excellent appearance of your paved yard. Systematic and proper care of paving stones will significantly extend their durability.

How to clean paving stones from dirt?

A beautiful and cozy yard is always associated with neat and clean paving stones. But even the most responsible owners are not immune to household contamination in the course of their daily activities.

In order to properly clean paving stones, it is necessary to understand what type of contamination will be removed.

Types of pavement contamination:

  • contamination with mud and mud
  • food contamination
  • cement contamination
  • oil contamination

Common household contaminants such as clods of earth, mud, food debris, fruit and berries that have fallen from trees, etc. are very easy to deal with. All you need to do is sweep and hose off the paved areas every 2-3 days with running water.

How to clean paving stones from cement?

Contamination of paving stones with cement mortar is very undesirable and dangerous for its structure. Due to its composition, cement penetrates very easily into the paving stones and can spoil their appearance when removed. Therefore, when working with cement mortar, be as careful as possible not to stain the paving slabs with it.

But if such a trouble has already occurred, it is important to remove the cement quickly before it penetrates deeply into the structure of the stone.

It is recommended to remove cement from paving stones only with special chemicals based on weak acids. Such solutions penetrate the dirt and destroy the structure of the adhering cement. At the same time, the structure of the paving stones remains intact and retains its properties.

It is strictly not recommended to clean paving stones from cement using "vandalism" tools such as a chisel, crowbar, or hammer. After all, by removing adhering cement in this way, you also damage the paving stones themselves.

Also, do not rush to remove cement using the "old-fashioned" method from the Internet. This is about sprinkling salt on the adhering cement and moistening it with water. Yes, this way you can partially destroy the cement structure and remove it. However, the disadvantage of this method is the simultaneous destruction of the paving stone structure, which loses its characteristics from the salt.

How to clean paving stones from grease?

Oil contamination of paving stones is not as critical as in the case of cement. But it is not easy to remove such stains either. So try to avoid them.

If this happens, remember that the best solution for removing stains is to treat them with special detergents. They perfectly remove dirt and do not damage the structure of the paving slabs.

Sand is a safe method for cleaning paving stones from grease. In particular, a little dry sand should be poured onto the fresh stain, which will draw in the grease. The sand should be left on the stain for 15-20 minutes, and then swept away with a broom. After that, it is recommended to rinse the area with running water and brush it. The procedure can be repeated several times.

Chemicals for the care of paving stones: what you need to know

When choosing paving chemicals, it is important to pay attention to whether the appropriate detergents are recommended for paving slabs and whether they are safe for the surface. After all, both the appearance and the service life of your pavement depend on it.

On a coarser scale, chemicals for paving stones can be divided into several types:

  • products for the protection of paving stones. They penetrate deep into the structure of the stone and create an invisible protective layer against stains, dirt and fading, reduce water absorption and improve frost resistance. It is recommended to use such products twice a year to protect the coating from the effects of climatic factors and possible contamination;
  • paving stone cleaning products. They are used when it is necessary to clean the surface from dirt. They are also effective for removing moss. Such products are used as soon as dirt or moss appears;
  • Acid-based products for cleaning efflorescence (a white coating that can appear over time due to precipitation) and cement stains. Such products penetrate deep into the structure of paving stones and remove complex contaminants as a result of physical and chemical reactions.

In specialized hardware stores and hypermarkets, you will find a fairly wide range of professional, high-quality and safe paving chemicals for paving stones. You will also find detailed recommendations on how to use these products.

So, as you can see, paving stone maintenance is not difficult at all. But it is responsible. And it requires, first of all, a reasonable approach, regular washing and the right selection of chemicals for paving slabs.
